Isopod Habitat Kit for Sale
The TC INSECTS Isopod Habitat Kit is the standard tier substrate and habitat base built for isopod culture tubs and humid bioactive enclosures. The kit exists to save setup time. Sourcing coco fiber, topsoil, leaf litter
, decaying wood, and a calcium source separately works, but it usually means several orders, several stores, and several days. The kit bundles those steps into one purchase.
Overview
This kit sits in the standard tier of the TC INSECTS habitat lineup. It is built for new keepers setting up their first culture tub and for existing keepers expanding to additional tubs. The TC INSECTS Ultra Isopod Habitat Kit
sits above it as the upgrade option for keepers who want a more advanced base.
Practically, the standard kit gives a solid starting substrate base that suits most humid and dry-leaning isopod species when paired with the right moisture management for each species. As a result, it works across a wide
range of TC INSECTS isopod cultures rather than being tied to a single care profile.
What the Kit Is Built For
- Faster setup. The kit replaces multiple separate component orders with a single purchase, which matters when setting up several culture tubs at once.
- Consistent substrate across enclosures. Using the same kit across several tubs keeps the substrate profile uniform, which helps when comparing colony performance.
- New keeper friendly. First-time isopod buyers get a structured starting point rather than having to guess at substrate composition.
- Multi-tub expansion. Keepers adding several new lines at once can order multiple kits to set up each tub quickly.
- Refresh option for established tubs. The kit can also be used to top up or refresh an existing substrate that has broken down over time.
Honest Note on What the Kit Does and Does Not Include
The kit is a substrate and habitat base, not a complete enclosure or a starter colony. As a result, a full setup also needs a tub or enclosure, a ventilated lid, additional leaf litter for top-ups over time, a steady food source like
TC INSECTS Isopod Food, supplemental calcium, and of course the isopods themselves. The kit handles the substrate prep step that most new keepers find the most time consuming, but it is not a one-purchase complete
colony bundle. Buyers expecting an all-in-one setup including live animals should plan to add those separately. For a more advanced substrate base, the TC INSECTS Ultra Isopod Habitat Kit is the upgrade tier.
How to Use This Kit
Setup is straightforward and follows standard isopod culture practice.
Choose the Enclosure
Pick a tub or enclosure with enough surface area for the species and quantity being kept. Cross-vented lids generally work better than mostly sealed lids for most species. Larger collector species and dry-leaning species benefit from more ventilation than humid Cuban or Neotropical species.
Add the Kit Substrate
Lay the kit substrate across the bottom of the enclosure at a useful depth. Deeper substrate works better for Cubaris, substrate-bound species, and larger collector species. Shallower substrate works fine for smaller dwarf species and surface-active cultures.
Top with Leaf Litter
Add a generous top layer of TC INSECTS Assorted Hardwood Leaf Litter. This provides cover, food, and the surface that most isopods spend their visible time on.
Add Moisture Gradient
Mist one side of the substrate to create a reliably moist zone, and leave the other side drier. The specific moisture target depends on the species: humid Cuban, Neotropical, and most Cubaris need more consistently moist substrate, while Proporcellio and other dry-leaning species need most of the substrate to dry between mistings.
Introduce the Colony
Transfer the isopods into the prepared enclosure, ideally in a dim, draft-free area, and leave them undisturbed for several days while they settle into the new substrate.
Best For
- First-time isopod keepers setting up their first culture tub.
- Existing keepers expanding to multiple new tubs at once.
- Buyers who want a consistent substrate base across several enclosures.
- Keepers refreshing an established substrate that has broken down.
- Anyone who prefers a one-purchase setup over sourcing components from multiple suppliers.
Not Best For
- Buyers expecting a complete all-in-one bundle that includes live isopods.
- Keepers who already have a preferred custom substrate mix they want to continue using.
- Setups that need the more advanced substrate profile of the Ultra Isopod Habitat Kit.
- Buyers looking only for a leaf litter top-up product, since Assorted Hardwood Leaf Litter is sold separately for that purpose.
- Aquatic invertebrate setups, since this kit is built for terrestrial isopod culture.
Standard Kit vs Ultra Kit
The TC INSECTS Isopod Habitat Kit is the standard tier substrate base, built for general culture and beginner-friendly setups. The TC INSECTS Ultra Isopod Habitat Kit is the upgrade tier, built for keepers who want a
more advanced substrate profile. Both work across a wide range of species. The choice generally comes down to how dialed-in the substrate base needs to be. Many keepers start with the standard kit, get a feel for their
culture management style, then upgrade to Ultra later if they want a more refined base.
Recommended Add-Ons
- TC INSECTS Isopod Food for steady protein and supplement coverage in any culture.
- TC INSECTS Assorted Hardwood Leaf Litter for cover, food, and breeding pinch points on top of the kit substrate.
- TC Calcium Ultra Fine for cuticle and molting support, especially for larger species.
- Springtails to handle mold and small organic debris in the new enclosure from day one.
- TC INSECTS Ultra Isopod Habitat Kit as an upgrade option for keepers who want a more advanced substrate base in addition to or instead of the standard kit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this kit include live isopods?
No. The Isopod Habitat Kit is a substrate and habitat base only. It is built to be used together with isopods purchased separately. Buyers expecting a complete bundle with live animals included should plan to add a culture from the TC INSECTS isopod selection alongside the kit.
Which isopod species can I use this kit with?
The kit suits most humid and dry-leaning isopod species when paired with appropriate moisture management for the specific culture. For humid Cubaris, Cuban, and Neotropical species, keep one side of the substrate consistently moist. For dry-leaning species like Proporcellio, keep most of the substrate drier with one small reliable moist zone. The substrate base works across both styles.
How long does the kit last in a single tub?
Substrate longevity depends on tub size, colony size, feeding frequency, and how often leaf litter is added on top. Generally, the kit base provides a solid starting layer that can be refreshed over time by adding more leaf litter, occasional small substrate top-ups, and steady food top-ups rather than fully replacing the substrate. Many keepers run the same base for an extended period before doing a full refresh.
Do I need to add anything else before introducing isopods?
Yes. A working setup needs the kit substrate, additional leaf litter on top, a steady food source like TC INSECTS Isopod Food, calcium support, and appropriate moisture management. The kit handles the substrate prep step but does not replace the other ongoing supplies needed to run a healthy colony.
Should I get the standard kit or the Ultra kit?
The standard kit suits beginner-friendly culture setups and general use across most species. The Ultra Isopod Habitat Kit suits keepers who want a more advanced substrate profile. Many buyers start with the standard kit, then upgrade to Ultra later if they want a more refined base. The choice comes down to how dialed-in the substrate needs to be from the start.
Can I use the same kit for multiple tubs?
Yes, depending on kit volume and tub size. Keepers expanding to several tubs often order multiple kits to set them all up at once, which keeps the substrate profile consistent across enclosures. This makes it easier to compare colony performance across species since the base is uniform.

This kit has been outstanding! It’s literally everything you need to be successful. Prior to this kit I experienced die off in my bioactive terrariums, but this kit and a youtube vid or 2 helped me understand isopod husbandry needs better and now i’ve been able to repopulate one of my bioactive terrariums successfully and have active, thriving colonies that are breeding successfully in both the kit and terrarium. My 2nd terrarium needs some work before it’s suitable for isopods, but now I know that. It’s been really fun and a joy to see the isopods thriving!
