Colombian Giant Red Leg Tarantula
Overview:
The Colombian giant red legged tarantula is a large, colorful species of tarantula originating from Colombia. They grow noticeably faster than a lot of other tarantula species, however they have a calm temper and only kick hairs when exposed to large vibrations or excessive movement. Though similar to the Mexican flame knee, the giant red leg has white around its joints, longer legs, and can get much larger than mexican flame knees do. This species can reach up to a 7″ leg span!
Care:
This tarantula is terrestrial, spending its time in burrows or walking along the ground in search of food. They need plenty of hides, and deep, loose substrate that they can make webs over and dig burrows in. They eat primarily insects such as Dubia roaches, though feeder mice and even fish can serve as good alternatives. They should have a reasonably sized water bowl with standing water, though its recommended to put dirt or paper towel in it to prevent accidental drowning. They also require mild humidity, this assists in the molting process. This species prefers room temperature, from 70-85 degrees, so if you’re comfortable, so are they! Cork bark and leaves are recommended, as well as small rocks throughout the enclosure. Vertical surfaces are beneficial, but not required for this species.
